It’s always fun to watch as people are swept up by the show’s vitality and the volume of hits from LRB’s history. Here’s to another successful year of the BAKER Smoke-Down Showdown at our new home, the Broken Spoke County Line!
Press release by Trish Horstman
Being the originators of the drag race style, head-to-head burnout competition in Sturgis, BAKER was prepared to make this year more monumental than any year before, and we did just that! We put over 20 builders, during two nights, poised 6 feet in the air on our amazing Burnout Cage built by the legendary Wink Eller and Jay Allen. These industry giants went head-to-head, two-by-two until in the end, both nights, only one man was left standing… and both nights it was the same guy!
The competition changed a little this year: we took out the element of BAKER judges and put in a fool proof system. We checked for 1st gear, you do the burnout, you hit an indicator button to declare you’re in 5th gear, we check for 5th, and if you are: you win! So it made the competition more exciting and fast paced – no longer was it first to 5th, but also fastest on the button!
When all the smoke cleared, the winner both nights was, without a doubt, Kevin Alsop of Big Bear Choppers.
BAKER Drivetrain would like to send out a huge thank you to all who participated and to our generous sponsors: Spectro Oils, Biker’s Choice and Indian Motorcycles of Chicago. Also thanks to the folks who dove in at the last minute to fill spaces left by guys who bailed. Your spontaneity and desire for burnt rubber is only matched by our gratitude! We would also like to thank Jay Allen and the Broken Spoke Saloon for hosting our nights of mayhem!
Welcome to the Biggest Biker Pool in Sturgis!
Big thanks to everyone that took a dip with Bean’re at his daily pool party. What a great way of cooling down after riding the Black Hills all day!
See you next year!!!!!
We would like to thank Justin Wickersham for covering the Wall That Heals opening ceremonies and helped us cast light on this special event.
The Legends Gallery will celebrate the opening of this extraordinary exhibit on Saturday, August 7th at 8 p.m. at The Broken Spoke Campground, 79 North, Sturgis, SD. David Uhl will be presenting his Sturgis Commemorative Collection, including “70 & Counting” – his newest piece commemorating the 70th anniversary of the “rally”. The exhibit will be also featuring “Stella” and “Evelyn”, which are the two last pieces in the Women of Harley-Davidson Collection.
David Uhl was born in Toledo, Ohio on September 20, 1961. Early on, David began creating amazing drawings and, by high school’s end, had decided to pursue a career in art. He applied for, and won, the only full-ride scholarship to the Colorado Institute of Art offered to a high school senior in the U.S. He was dissatisfied with the design programs the school offered, yet he excelled at the life drawing and illustration classes. Leaving school after one year, he focused his talents on commercial illustration, eventually forming Uhl Illustration, an award-winning firm servicing many prominent clients such as FedEx, IBM, Coca-Cola and Time magazine.
Please join us for The Wall That Heals opening ceremony at one pm on Saturday, this special tribute should not be missed. Help us salute the fallen soldiers that have lost their lives in the name of freedom.
The Wall That Heals will be open for 24 hours a day till August 13th at 6pm for the Closing Ceremonies. The wall is a half scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and will be free for the general public beginning with opening ceremonies on Saturday, August 7 through closing ceremonies on Friday, August 13. The Broken Spoke Campground is located on State Highway 79, just past Bear Butte State Park in Sturgis, South Dakota.
We would like to thank all military personal for your service!
