During the BUB Motorcycle Speed Trails in Bonneville in late August 09, Jay and his team tied down their 3rd Land Speed Record! Jay accomplished a few passes in the 3000 APF Class before he lost his fairing. Lady luck was on his side when he proceeded to hit a time mile marker and crashed. The front tire was busted and his ankle became bruised and swollen. “ I couldn’t give up, I put my swollen foot back in my boot and shook off the salt. A big thanks goes out to the amazing racing family who loaned me a new tire and got the new Land Speed Record of 167.276!”

Broken Spoke Racing Takes Home Two Records From Bonneville
After setting new attendance records at the Broken Spoke Saloons in Sturgis, I headed to Bonneville to continue my winning streak. With the help of Broken Spoke Racing Team, I defeated two past Land Speed Records this year at the Bonneville Salt Flats. The beginning of the week was spent fine-tuning and dialing in the 2005 S&S 124 cubic inch single cam motor. It also runs Rob Schopf B-2 heads and a Baker 6 speed tranny right out of the box. On Tuesday, Jay Allen surpassed the first Land Speed record of 120.392 to an outstanding 182.011 in the 3000cc APS-PF class. Following up on Thursday,I did it once again and gained another Land Speed record by over taking the past record of 142.875 to 184.667 in the 3000cc APS-PF class. The Broken Spoke Racing Team will be heading back to Bonneville to try to reach our goals of breaking the 200mph records. All of this leads up to the much anticipated Bub event at Bonneville, I am humbled to be apart of it. Keep watching for updates on our progress!

Bringing The Spirit Of Sturgis Back

The Good Ol’ Days Raceway captured the essence of Sturgis that has been forgotten by many over the past decade. Thanks to the Broken Spoke Saloon on the County Line Road and Cycle Source Magazine who helped launch the inaugural year of the Good Ol’ Days Raceway, spirited competition was alive and well at this year’s Black Hills Classic. The Raceway posses a 1/4 mile dirt oval track and housed an infield motor cross-TT track. All the action could be seen for miles under the shining lights and once those lights went up, it was on. From old motorcycles such as a ’49 Panhead and the ’47 Knuckle tearing up the track to a new 2009 HD there were no limits or boundaries. At any given time during the day you would witness fellow campers race their motorcycles for a few hours and at night a dozen of the Limpnickie Lot members and friends would gear up and proceeded to have endless dirt bike races. No rules, just good clean racing. Onlookers stood merrily by, without the facilities that a race venue might have like bleachers or a concession stand, and just marveled at people, once again, having fun on motorcycles.
Due to an over whelming response there are already talks for an expansion of The Good Ol’ Days Raceway for 2010 including the possibility of Speedway Races, a chance to learn flat track skills from Chris Carr and more vintage action. Mark it on your calendar and see you next year!

Chris Carr Gives Back In Sturgis!

During the inaugural opening of the Good Ol’ Days Raceway at the Broken Spoke Saloon on the County Line, the 7x AMA Grand National Flat Track Champion Chris Carr used some of his down time between competitions to give back to his fellow motorcycle enthusiasts.
On Thursday morning, Chris Carr’s #4 racing rig pulled in and proceeded to unload his race bikes as well as the XR750 HD flat track bike. Well over 100 people including the Limpnickie Lot members received a valuable lesson on the flat track history. Chris spoke for a few hours on the beginnings of flat track racing, the particulars of racing today and on his Land Speed Record setting run in the Bub Streamliner. On September 5, 2006 Chris Carr broke the land speed record on a motorcycle at the Bonneville Salt Flats with a two-pass run averaging 350.8 mph. His fastest run was 354 mph and his successful run was established aboard the BUB’S racing “Number Seven Streamliner”. Chris remains the fastest man in the world on two wheels…and this record is recorded in the 2008 edition of the Guinness book of world records.
After speaking, Chris then geared up for a few hole shot demos in the parking lot on his XR750 and proceeded to move onto the track for a few hot laps on his Honda. 2x AMA Motor Cross rider Geno Stull joined Chris on his own 4 stroke Yamaha. They went head to head for a few laps, entertaining the onlookers. Afterwards, Chris suggested that Geno try the same laps with a bike that has no front brake and smooth tires as opposed to knobbies. The two traded bikes to experience the others set up.
Chris’s devotion for flat track racing is endless and he has started an outreach program called American Supercamp. The camp is a riding skills and balance improvement course for all motorcycle riders that lasts two days and can be attended all over the country. Boy what a crazy busy week! I am tired but it is a great feeling to know that we did it this year. I have busting my ass all year long to make this year Sturgis the best places for riders to experience in Sturgis. Well folks the numbers are in and they are overwhelming, new attendance records were set at the Original Broke Spoke Saloon on Lazelle Street and the extended version, The Broken Spoke Campground on the County Line.
The maiden Broken Spoke Saloon housed a display of the Next Generation and Beyond Builders Motorcycles and the spectators received one on one time with Brian Elliott of Black Sunshine Customs featured his Goldy Locks motorcycle that is featured in the September issue of Cycle Source, Rod Davis of Stripped Down Cycles and his bike that took the trophy at a recent Horse Magazine Chop-off contest and Scott Williams of Williams Originals, whose Lil Sling Shot build won a recent Limpnickie Lot award during the Easyrider Bike Show Tour. Business was non-stop for this Sturgis landmark! 
From all accounts, the Broken Spoke Campground on the County Line became it’s own little town. Partygoers and campers could experience the Biggest Drive- In Biker Bar, the Limpnickie Lot, The Good Ol’ Days Racetrack, Vendors Village and The American Motor Dome. This year was very special as the Moving Wall was on site for the spectators to experience. “I truly believe it brought The Broken Spoke great karma,” stated Jay. “ If you needed a place to kick back and cool down, we had that available for you. It’s known as the Biggest Biker Pool and you could get a cold one served to you by the hottest bikini clad Spoke Girls.” 
The week was filled with great times, two of them being the Sugarbear and Michael Litcher Ride and the opening of the Legends Gallery. Well over 300 people attended the ride that ended at an amazing 30,000-acre ranch where everybody, including Sugarbear, handled the ropes to barrel racing with their own scoots. The night was capped off by the amazing standing room only opening of the Legends Gallery, which contained some Famous Motorcycles, the awesome photography from Colleen Swartz and Speed King’s Jeff Cochran. You could also lay your eyes on some jaw-dropping paintings from the master artists David Uhl and John Guillemette. The weeklong rally had endless events and concerts that kept the party going and a special pool party was given to the first 500 campers that booked thru the website. Bringing Motorcycling Back To The Motorcycle Rally
So by now you know that the Broken Spoke Sturgis County Line has been making great strides to cover all your needs during the Black Hills Rally but one thing that Jay Allen felt was missing was the “Good Ol’ Days” feeling that came from going to a rally and watching amateur racers compete on old time tracks. 
In this tradition The Sturgis County Line has just completed the “Good Ol’ Days Raceway”, designed and built by National caliper motocross rider and champion, Gene Stull. Gene has 20 years of riding and has been building tracks for over 12 years now. He will have this track open and ready for the full 2009 Event schedule. So what is it? Well, it is a combination ¼ Mile oval that will host short track amateur flat track events, High banked corners will provide great action for spectators and has already peaked the interest of racers in the area and around the country. Inside the oval there is a motocross track like the ones from the old days where Rocket Rex Stanton and Marty Sipes would tear it up. Nice jumps and full out burms to shoot, a great practice track for young and old that will be open all week long, and it’s free to practice for anyone who camps at the County Line, just $10 to practice for non campers. Jay and the staff of the Spoke understand that there are a lot of reasons to come to Sturgis and now believe that there is a great one to bring the whole family along. Where else in the world could you wake up to a picturesque view of Bear Butte Mountain, run a motocross practice track after breakfast, check out some of the greatest bikes from the next generation today at the Limpnickie Lot, Take a break by the pool during the hot afternoon sun, hear top national acts like Nashville Pussy at night, and watch flat track racing under the lights. All this plus contests, barmaids, special runs and events, give-a-ways, bikes shows, wait for you at the Sturgis County Line. So this year, bring the kids, bring your dirt bike and get ready to ride.

Laconia Lives!

Hey Guys and Gals,
First off I want to thanks each and every one of you that showed up at the Broken Spoke Saloon in Laconia! We all expect rain when we head up to Laconia and this year the Rain Gods did not disappoint. The amazing thing to me was how full the Spoke was at all times, it seemed that there wasn’t an empty spot for bikes all week long. That’s what I love about the riders up north, rain or shine, they are always willing to ride!! Every day we had a new and very cool vintage bike show as the riders parked their vintage bikes through out The Broken Spoke. The Broken Spoke girls worked the crowd into an frenzy and the bands kicked ass! 
The coolest thing to witness was the true workmanship of Paul Cox and Chica. For the Biker Build Off it was based on the recession, both men had to look around their shops and pull a bike together from what they had lying around. By the time they got up to Laconia , Chica had his chopper ready and Paul had to adjust a few things. I got to watch Chica walk up to Paul and side-by-side they worked on Paul’s ride till 3:00 in the morning to get it ready for the Shakedown Ride at ten am. Both bikes ran flawlessly on the ride and when the bikes took the stage, the crowd went nuts. Paul won the Build Off with a 5% margin but in my eyes they are both winners. Since the event , both of them have stated how exciting it was. It is very cool when you work on a event and it all turns out great!
Every night we did have a walk thru from the local law enforcement at 11 and they stated that The Broken Spoke was the only happening spot. Man, those were some great words to hear. I want to thank everyone again for a great week and remember The Broken Spoke Laconia location is open until Nov. 1st!!! Up next is Sturgis where we have rides planned with the legendary Sugarbear and Michael Lichter, The Cycle Source Magazine Ride and Bike Show, the unveiling of the Legends Gallery, nightly bands, the new Spoke-2-Spoke shuttle and so much more. Indian Larry’s sidekick, Paul Cox is ready to put an East Coast ass-kickin’ on the legend Chica, from Japan. Paul is one of the most detail-oriented builders in motorcycle customizing. His bikes are lean and mean – not to mention with no front breaks, and a suicide shifter – and Paul Cox rides them on the streets of Brooklyn, New York as aggressive as a junk yard dog!
Chica, the samurai of bike builders has rarely lost on the Discovery build-offs or in bike shows entered. Like Paul, Chica is a one man wrecking crew. He fabricates his bikes on a concrete floor with zero bike stands in his shop. Employees don’t last long as they can’t keep up with his grueling hours of non-stop work. As far as what he’s been working on for Laconia – Chica says if they made Easy Rider in Japan, Peter Fonda would be riding his Laconia Build-Off Bike!
